Green Economy Roadmap for Grand Challenge 2: A Work in Progress by EU4DUAL

EU4DUAL is currently developing a robust and comprehensive roadmap to address Grand Challenge 2 (GC2) with a focus on promoting the goals of the green economy. This roadmap intends to be strategically designed to align with international sustainability objectives, leveraging data-driven insights and aligning with key directives to ensure impactful outcomes.

Roadmap Process

The roadmap process is centred around a cyclical process of data mining, publications, EU4DUAL products, and further publications. This integrated approach ensures that all aspects of the green economy are considered and that the outputs are both meaningful and aligned with global standards.

  1. Data Mining:
    • Sources: The data mining process involves the collection and analysis of data from prominent global organisations, including the United Nations (UN), the European Union (EU), and the World Economic Forum (WEF).
    • Purpose: The goal is to gather comprehensive data that reflects the current state and trends in sustainability and green economy practices. This data serves as the foundation for informed decision-making and strategic planning.
  2. Publications:
    • Annual GC2 Impact Narrative: Once developed, this report will provide a detailed narrative of the impact and progress made in addressing GC2. It is designed to be an online experience centre, making it accessible and engaging for a wide audience.
    • GC2 Trends: These publications, planned for release annually or every second year, will highlight the trends and developments in GC2, providing valuable insights for stakeholders and guiding future initiatives.
  3. EU4DUAL Products:
    • Educational Programmes: Offering degrees such as PhD and Master’s programmes, EU4DUAL aims to provide advanced education tailored to the needs of the green economy.
    • Micro-Credentials (MCs): These short, focused learning modules will provide specific skills and knowledge required for the green economy.
    • Industry/Development Projects: Collaboration with industries to develop and implement projects that contribute to sustainability goals.
    • Entrepreneurship: Encouraging and supporting entrepreneurial activities that promote sustainable development and green economy initiatives.

Guiding Directives

While the roadmap is being developed, it aligns with key directives to ensure compliance and relevance in the broader sustainability context:

  • Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD): This directive ensures that companies disclose information on how they operate and manage social and environmental challenges. It promotes transparency and accountability in corporate sustainability practices.
  • Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDD): This directive focuses on ensuring that companies conduct due diligence to identify, prevent, mitigate, and account for the negative impacts of their activities on human rights and the environment.

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

At the heart of the roadmap is a commitment to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These goals provide a universal framework for sustainable development, addressing global challenges such as poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace, and justice. The roadmap’s initiatives are designed to support and advance these goals, ensuring that the efforts contribute to a sustainable future.

EU4DUAL is making significant strides in promoting the green economy. By leveraging data mining, adhering to guiding directives, and planning impactful publications and products, the roadmap for Grand Challenge 2 is set to drive meaningful progress towards sustainability. This comprehensive approach not only addresses current challenges but also prepares for future developments, ensuring a resilient and sustainable green economy.

The first EU4DUAL International Staff Week was held from 22 to 29 February in Kuopio, Finland, in the facilities of our Alliance partners at the Savonia University of Applied Sciences. 44 participants from 16 different nationalities took part in this enriching event, which was organised for staff from the 9 Alliance partner universities as well as from any other institution. Thanks to this open approach, participants from Costa Rica, China, Kosovo and Ukraine also joined the week. In order to serve as a kick-off event for one of the major challenges that the EU4DUAL Alliance aims to address: Green Economy.
